Aaron Siegel
collaborates with, and is inspired by, a number of challenging thinkers
and artists. His work ranges from solo piano compositions and electronic
music to improvised ensembles and multi-channel sound installations. Trained
as a percussionist in the Washington, DC area, Aaron lived in Ann Arbor,
MI for six years while he pursued Bachelor’s degrees in music and
English literature at the University of Michigan. In the fall of 2000,
Aaron relocated to Brooklyn, New York where, for two years, he curated
over 75 concerts for the Eggwolf Series of New and Improvised music in
Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
His compositions have been featured on bills by the new music presenters
Wet Ink Musics, as well as at the annual AugustArt festival in Times Square,
Manhattan. Other works have been performed at Wesleyan University and
the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. In November of 2004, the
Flux String Quartet premiered Siegel's Wait, for string quartet,
at Crowell Concert Hall in Middletown, CT. A new solo piano piece entitled
A Diminished Thing, commissioned by the Argentinean pianist Walter
Frank, was featured in a New York City recital in September 2005. His
work has been supported by the Consulate General of Argentina, and grants
from Wesleyan University and Meet the Composer. Siegel has studied composition
with Nora Davenport, Stephen Rush, Alvin Lucier, Ron Kuivila and Anthony
Braxton. He has an MA in composition from Wesleyan University.
Siegel’s multi-channel sound works and sound sculptures have been
installed in Chicago, IL at the Myopic Bookstore and as part of the No
Echo and For a Long Time festivals. In January 2005, Siegel
installed Sounding Place, a group of five new sound works, in
the Zelnick Pavilion in Middletown, CT. He has lectured on his work at
the Cybersonica Festival of Sound and Art in London, UK, the Art Academy
in Dusseldorf, Germany and the University for Art and Design in Karlsruhe,
Germany.
Aaron has shared the stage as a percussionist with several well-known
improvisers, in addition to his many peers, including: Fred Lonberg-Holm,
Scott Rosenberg, Guillermo Gregorio, Stephen Rush, Boris Hauf, Jason Roebke,
Nate Wooley and Sean Meehan. He is a member of Memorize the Sky, The Anthony
Braxton Sextet, Chorus of Seeds. Rainer and Low and Away, all of which
represent long-standing improvisational relationships. As part of these
and other ensembles, Aaron has toured extensively in the United States
and Europe.
Aaron’s recent recordings are a limited edition CD of electronic
music entitled Rooms and Spaces, and a forthcoming solo percussion CD
to be released on Longbox Recordings. 1999's Shy Moments features 8 compositions
for quartet, and there are three 3" recordings documenting the music
of Memorize the Sky. His playing is featured on 2+2 Compositions, on 482
Music featuring Anthony Braxton, Matt Bauder and Zach Wallace, and several
forthcoming documents of the Anthony Braxton Sextet and the Anthony Braxton
Creative Orchestra. One of his tape pieces was selected to be part of
a compilation entitled A Call for Silence that was curated by the London-based
Sonic Arts Network.
