BOOKSTORE
This is the
second installation in a series of pieces dealing with the placement of
processed field recordings in an uncontrolled sonic environment. The first
installation at Horgan House in Middletown, Connecticut consisted of processed
sounds of the outdoors, being broadcasted outside at the same location
at which they were recorded. For Bookstore, I recorded sounds at two different
bookstores in Brooklyn, New York. One of the bookstores was an independent
community bookstore, while the other store was a Barnes and Noble. For
the installation at Myopic, I have placed the sounds from each of the
stores at opposite ends of the space in order to create the maximum distinction
between the two.
The recordings are processed with a program that separates the full amplitude
spectrum into thin bandwidths and selects how many of those bandwidths
will be heard at any given moment. I feel that the pacing and development
of both recordings somehow reflects each of the store’s unique relationship
to commerce.
